The Soviet Union retained the men’s team gold medal at the 28th Chess Olympiad in Salonika, Greece, but the defending champion Soviet women’s team lost the gold to Hungary. Soviet world champion Gary Kasparov won the overall men’s gold medal. In the women’s competition, 12-year-old Judit Polgar, joining her sisters Zfofia and Zfusua on the Hungarian team, won the overall gold in boosting the Hungarians over the Soviets.
