Pomona : Funds Sought for Bike Path

Share

Los Angeles County has applied for $800,000 in state bond money to begin building a 14-mile bicycle path from the San Gabriel River to Pomona.

The Board of Supervisors approved the application Tuesday, beating a Dec. 1 deadline for proposals to spend $2.5 million set aside for recreational trails in June as part of Proposition 70. State officials said they expect to receive proposals costing about $10 million--four times the available amount.

Proposition 70 approved the sale of $776 million in state bonds to set up a California wildlife, coastal and park conservation fund.

An $800,000 award would pay for the first 2.6 miles of the bikeway along San Jose Creek in the City of Industry. The rest would be built over several years, with funds coming from either state bonds or a special sales tax account administered by the county Transportation Commission.

When the San Jose Creek bikeway is completed, riders will be able to pedal unobstructed from Temple Avenue in Pomona to the 28-mile San Gabriel River bikeway, which intersects with a new 7-mile path along the ocean in Long Beach.
