Local News in Brief : Midway City : HUD Honors Innovative Design of Midway Meadows Housing for Elderly

A public housing project for the elderly was recognized Thursday by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for its innovative design.
The Midway Meadows Senior Apartments, a 95-unit complex for low-income senior citizens, was built in 1986 on county-owned land by the Shawntana Development Co., which leased the land from the city to build the apartments exclusively for low-income seniors.
The residents pay 30% of their incomes for the apartments, which rent for $540 a month; federal rent subsidies make up the difference.
About 130 seniors live in the white clapboard-and-stucco row houses. Each house has one bedroom, a kitchen with a dishwasher and a self-cleaning oven, a large living room and a bathroom big enough to accommodate a wheelchair.
Sandra McClymonds, executive director of the Orange County Housing Authority, estimated that there are about 9,000 low-income families in the county who are eligible to receive federally subsidized housing but have been unable to get it.
