College Basketball Roundup : Kansas Tops Seattle in Home Debut

Mark Randall scored 31 points, and defending national champion Kansas turned back Seattle University, 98-65, in its home opener at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas (3-1) had a 42-31 halftime lead and broke open the game by outscoring the Chieftains, 19-6, at the start of the second half.

Milt Newton added 17 points for Kansas, and Mike Maddux had 13.

Eric Petersen scored 20 points for Seattle (0-7).

Boston College 90, New Hampshire 76--Dana Barros scored 32 points to lead the Eagles over the Wildcats at Newton, Mass.

New Hampshire (1-2) played Boston College (2-1) to a 38-38 tie in the first half, but Doug Able scored 12 of his 15 points in the first 9 minutes of the second half as the Eagles drew out to a 60-51 lead and weren’t threatened again.

Steven Benton had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Boston College, while Joe Spitale scored 17 points for New Hampshire.

Clemson 79, Furman 64--Jerry Pryor scored 21 points, and Elden Campbell added 11 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocked shots as the Tigers beat the Paladins at Greenville, S.C.

Pryor made 8 of 11 shots for Clemson (2-0), which connected on 50.8% and coasted after building a 40-26 halftime lead.

David Brown scored 15 points for Furman (0-2).

West Virginia 61, Fresno State 57--Steve Berger scored 15 points, and the Mountaineers held off the Bulldogs at Morgantown, W.Va.

Fresno State (1-3) trailed by 17 points early in the second half but pulled within 57-55 with 16 seconds left on 2 consecutive 3-point shots by Andre Sims. Then Herbie Brooks and Tracy Shelton each sank 2 free throws for West Virginia (1-1).

Jervis Cole scored 21 points for Fresno State.

Arizona State 106, Indiana State 91--Tarence Wheeler scored 22 points as the Sun Devils overpowered the Sycamores at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (2-1) took control with 9 straight points to take a 45-40 halftime lead.

Jeff Lauritzen scored 32 points, and Eddie Bird had 24 for Indiana State (2-1), which lost its 21st straight road game.

Oregon 93, Whitworth 67--Brett Coffey and Randy Grant each scored 21 points, and the Ducks defeated the Pirates at Eugene, Ore.

Todd Martin scored 19 points for Whitworth (1-2), while Steve Ranniger added 20 for Oregon (1-1).

Weber State 80, BYU 78--Paxton Cobb hit a 3-point shot with 3 seconds remaining to lift the Wildcats to victory over the Cougars at Ogden, Utah.

Rico Washington had 29 points and 15 rebounds for Weber State (3-0), while Mike Smith had 30 points and 10 rebounds for BYU (1-2).
