A.B. (Happy) Chandler, former baseball commissioner supports efforts to clear Shoeless Joe Jackson’s name so that he can be considered for the Hall of Fame.
The Bowling Green (KY.) Daily News reported Friday that Chandler said he hopes commissioner-elect Bart Giamatti will consider restoring Jackson’s major league status soon after Giamatti is sworn in next year.
Jackson was one of eight Chicago White Sox accused of conspiring to throw the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.
They were found innocent in court, but then-commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned all eight players from the sport in 1920.
Jackson, from South Carolina, was still maintaining his innocence when he died in 1951.
