College Basketball Roundup : Louisville Has Fun With Indiana, 101-79

Louisville wanted to have some fun Saturday, and the Cardinals did, at Indiana’s expense.

Pervis Ellison scored 19 points and LaBradford Smith added 17 as the 13th-ranked Cardinals trounced the defenseless Hoosiers, 101-79, in the Big Four tournament at Indianapolis.

In the other game, Kevin Ellery came off the bench to hit 4 3-pointers and score 15 points as Notre Dame (2-0) beat Kentucky, 81-65.

LeRon Ellis scored 22 points for Kentucky (2-3).

“We hadn’t been playing very well, and we talked about having fun, playing like we were in practice,” Louisville Coach Denny Crum said. “When you play a pressing style game, you’ve got to play all out, and we hadn’t been doing that. Today, we shot the ball well and did the things we wanted to do.

“Our guard play, up until today, has been very mediocre at best. If we were going to win, we had to do it with our up-front strength. We had a maximum effort from everybody who played.”

The loss marked the third time this season that Indiana (3-3) has given up 100 or more points. In Bob Knight’s 17 previous seasons as coach, it happened only once.

The Hoosiers were forced into 18 turnovers, including 14 in the first half, and Louisville (1-2) converted the errors into 25 points.

“We had the same problem this game as in the 2 games in New York (losses in the Big Apple NIT), where we get off to such a bad start and then have to work and try to get back in the game,” Knight said. “We did a pretty good job from where we were to get back into it.

“We had it to 8 several times . . . then all of a sudden we were down 17 or 18.”

The Hoosiers, who rallied from a 40-22 deficit in the first half, got to within 8 just after halftime before the Cardinals steadily put the game out of reach.

Everick Sullivan had 6 points during a 20-6 Louisville run as the Cardinals took their biggest lead, 85-61, and coasted the final 8 minutes. Cornelius Holden’s basket with 10 seconds left put Louisville over the 100-point mark.

Chuckie White scored 20 points for Indiana and sophomore Jay Edwards had 18.

North Carolina 76, Missouri 60--Rick Fox scored 24 points and Kevin Madden had 19 as the 10th-ranked Tar Heels beat the 8th-ranked Tigers in the championship game of the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

The game was the second in 10 days between the teams as North Carolina (6-1) avenged a 91-81 defeat in the semifinals of the Big Apple NIT in New York.

Doug Smith and freshman Anthony Peeler each scored 10 points for Missouri (5-2).

Duke 86, Northwestern 62--Danny Ferry scored 21 points, and the top-ranked Blue Devils trounced the Wildcats at Durham, N.C.

With Duke (4-0) leading 36-33, Smith made a 3-pointer that started a 16-2 run that put the Blue Devils ahead by 17 points with 10 minutes left.

Brian Schwabe scored 17 points for Northwestern (2-1).

Illinois 91, Mississippi 79--The seventh-ranked Illini scored the first 12 points and coasted past the Rebels at Champaign, Ill.

Nick Anderson scored 23 points for Illinois (3-0) and Lowell Hamilton added 18. Gerald Glass scored 32 points for Ole Miss (2-2).

Florida State 104, Florida 86--George McCloud scored 31 points, and Tony Dawson added 21 as the 14th-ranked Seminoles defeated the 19th-ranked Gators at Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State (3-0) is averaging 112.3 points per game.

Dwayne Schintzius and Dwayne Davis scored 22 points each for the Gators (3-2).

Michigan 104, South Dakota State 66--Loy Vaught scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half and Glen Rice added 23 points as the second-ranked Wolverines overpowered the Jackrabbits at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Rumeal Robinson added 16 points and Sean Higgins had 15 for Michigan (5-0). Cullen Ober had 22 points for South Dakota State (3-1).

Southern Methodist 59, North Carolina State 57--Kato Armstrong scored 17 points, including 2 key free throws with 56 seconds left, as the Mustangs upset the 16th-ranked Wolfpack at Dallas.

Armstrong’s free throws gave SMU (1-1) a 59-52 lead, and the Mustangs beat the Wolfpack (2-1) when Rodney Monroe’s last-second shot bounced off the rim.

Monroe scored 22 points for the Wolfpack.

Villanova 80, Vermont 58--Doug West scored 20 of his 22 points in the first half, and the No. 18 Wildcats beat the Catamounts at Villanova, Pa.

West made 7 of 9 shots in the first half to lead a 16-4 run that gave the Wildcats (4-1) a 42-26 lead at halftime.

Joe Calavita, Kenny White and Bart Donovan each had 11 points for Vermont (1-3).

Arizona 68, Temple 50--Anthony Cook scored 21 points and Sean Elliott had 18 as the 11th-ranked Wildcats turned back the 17th-ranked Owls in the consolation game of the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

Arizona (2-1) made 16 of 28 shots in the first half while building a 41-28 lead.

Mark Macon had 19 points for Temple (0-2), which had not lost 2 straight games since the 1984-85 season, when it was beaten by Villanova and Bradley. The Owls had not started 0-2 since 1939.

Georgia Tech 94, George Washington 64--Dennis Scott scored 31 points, and the No. 12 Yellow Jackets routed the Colonials at Washington.

Tom Hammonds scored 15 of the first 23 points for Georgia Tech (3-0) and finished with 21. Brian Oliver added 20. Ellis McKenzie scored 18 points for George Washington (0-3), which missed 14 of its first 17 shots.

Ohio State 77, Western Michigan 66--Jay Burson scored 17 points as the 15th-ranked Buckeyes defeated the Broncos at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Perry Carter had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Ohio State (3-1). Tony White also had 15 points for the Buckeyes.

Mark Brown scored 28 points for Western Michigan (2-1).

Tennessee 91, Tennessee Chattanooga 76--Dyron Nix had 32 points and 20 rebounds as the 20th-ranked Volunteers defeated the Moccasins at Knoxville, Tenn.

Nix scored 14 points as Tennessee (3-0) rolled to a 33-7 lead in the first 10 minutes.

Daren Chandler scored 22 points for the Moccasins (1-3).

UC Santa Barbara 76, U. San Diego 58--Mike Doyle scored 19 points to lead the Gauchos over the Toreros at Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos (3-0) forced 16 turnovers to en route to a 39-19 halftime lead, then made 58% of their shots in the second half.

Efrem Leonard had 13 points for San Diego (3-1).

St. Mary’s 71, Montana 58--Erick Newman scored 21 points, and the Gaels rallied from an 8-point halftime deficit to defeat the Grizzlies at Missoula, Mont.

Terry Burns added 17 points for St. Mary’s (3-0). Wayne Tinkle scored 15 points for Montana (3-2).

Oregon State 66, Kansas State 48--The Beavers went on a 13-6 run to take a 54-42 lead with 4:04 left and went on to beat the Wildcats at Corvallis, Ore. Senior forward Eric Knox scored 18 points to lead Oregon State (2-0). Kansas State is 2-1.
