Prep Review : It’s Time for Another Refrain of Football Season’s Name Game

Share

Well, it’s that time. A time of good cheer, childlike anticipation, festive lights and warm smiles.

Yes, it could mean only one thing . . . The Times’ Annual All-Name Football Team!

It’s time for our collection of oddities, curiosities, never-before-presented-isms (for good reason, in some instances) and just plain nutty names that have graced the rosters of this season’s Orange County high school football teams.

It may be good to be the king, but if you want to win football games in Orange County, heaven help you if you set a record.

Servite running back Derek Brown set the county single-season rushing record Friday, gaining 186 yards to improve his season total to 2,301. That topped Kerwin Bell’s record of 2,226 set in 1979 with Edison.

Point is, Brown lost. Servite was defeated by Fountain Valley, 10-7, in the Division I semifinals.

El Modena kicker Tim Hatcher made a 27-yard field goal Friday to tie the county record for field goals in a season set by Newport Harbor’s Art Source in 1974.

Hatcher lost, too, as El Modena was beaten by Los Alamitos, 19-3, in the Division III semifinals.

Which is reminiscent of record-setting quarterback Todd Marinovich, formerly of Capistrano Valley, who set the national career passing record last season during a 28-21 loss to Mission Viejo.

Fast Tracks: Jimmy Rodriguez, a senior at Santa Ana Valley High School, placed third in the Kinney Western Regional cross-country championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Rodriguez, who placed third in the state cross-country championships on the same course the previous Saturday, ran the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, which is 5 seconds faster than his previous Woodward Park best. Francis O’Neill of San Pasqual won in 14:56, and Bryan Dameworth of Calabasas was second in 14:58. Eddie Lavelle of Corona del Mar was 14th in 15:23.

The top eight finishers advance to the Kinney National cross-country championships Saturday at San Diego’s Balboa Park, which will be televised nationally by NBC Dec. 17 at noon.

Rodriguez, who was in 15th place with about 1,000 meters remaining, surged through the last portion of the race, picking off runners on the way.

More than 1,500 runners from 13 states competed in the meet. Other Orange County finishers included Mike Ferrell of San Clemente (26th, 15:34), Steve Frisone of Laguna Hills (29th, 15:38), Steve Niednagel of Dana Hills (41st, 15:44.9), Jose Brito of Santa Ana Valley (46th, 15:47) and Mike Tansley of Dana Hills (49th, 15:49).

Kira Jorgensen, the defending national champion from Rancho Buena Vista High in Vista, won the girls’ race in 17:28 by outkicking Rayna Cervantes of Montebello, who finished second in 17:31.
