Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Man Attempts Suicide at South Coast Plaza
A 19-year-old man plunged through a skylight at South Coast Plaza in an apparent suicide attempt, police said Tuesday.
Lt. Dennis Cost said the Huntington Beach man apparently entered the mall sometime before 11:35 p.m. Monday through a service door and climbed onto the roof through a hatch near a fast-food restaurant.
“He tied one end of a fire hose to a support beam and the other end around his neck,” Cost said. “Then he jumped right through one of the skylights of the second story.”
But, Cost said, pieces of the broken skylight apparently cut the fire hose and the man fell to the ground with only minor injuries.
He was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for psychiatric evaluation, Cost said.
