Local News in Brief : Council Delays Vote on Day Laborer Plan

Share

The Glendale City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to postpone for one year action on a proposed ordinance that would have prohibited day laborers from seeking work on city property.

The proposed ordinance was drafted in August in response to complaints by merchants that about 50 day laborers who congregated at a street corner in central Glendale were disrupting business, littering and causing traffic congestion.

City Manager David Ramsay told the council that a program begun in September to move the laborers to an officially sanctioned site in an industrial area in southern Glendale has been successful.

The program was organized and monitored by a committee of city officials, local businessmen, immigrant rights advocates and day laborers, Ramsay said. “We believe a unique and special team has been created to deal with this issue,” he said.
