Sweden advanced to the quarterfinals of the Federation Cup tennis tournament with a 2-1 upset of the United States at Melbourne, Australia.

Maria Strandlund defeated Patty Fendick, 6-2, 7-6, in the opening singles, and Catarina Lindqvist defeated Lori McNeil, 6-4, 7-5, to give the unseeded Swedes the victory over the second-seeded Americans, playing without their No. 1 player, Barbara Potter, who has a strained thigh muscle.

In other second round matches, Denmark upset seventh-seeded Argentina, 2-1; Czechoslovakia defeated New Zealand, 3-0; Canada defeated Finland, 3-0; Australia beat Italy, 3-0; defending champion West Germany defeated France, 3-0; the top-seeded Soviet Union got past Austria, 2-1, and Spain beat Indonesia, 3-0.
