U.S. Disaster Aid Possible for Fire Victims
Gov. George Deukmejian’s declaration Friday of a state of emergency for the fire-devastated areas of Los Angeles opens the way to applying for federal relief, officials said.
In addition to people who may be eligible for tax reassessment for wind- or fire-damaged homes or businesses, property owners suffering uninsured losses might be able to receive government aid, Kevin Brett, the governor’s press secretary, said Saturday.
Officials are trying to assess the amount of the damage, Brett said, and determine if it meets the criteria for federal assistance. He said he didn’t know how long it would take.
