Tennis Roundup : Lendl to Play McEnroe in Forum Final
John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl scored victories Saturday and will meet at noon today for the title in the $300,000 Challenge Series at the Forum.
McEnroe defeated Andre Agassi, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2; Lendl beat Michael Chang, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Derrick Rostagno and Matt Anger defeated Brad Gilbert and Mel Purcell, 7-5, 6-4.
Rick Leach of Laguna Beach and Jim Pugh of Palos Verdes started slowly, then finished off Jorge Lozano and Todd Witsken to reach the final of the Masters Doubles tournament in London.
Leach and Pugh won, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2, and will play Spain’s Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez, who advanced with a 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Anders Jarryd of Sweden and John Fitzgerald of Australia.
By reaching the final, Leach assured himself of winning the year’s doubles bonus pool, worth $165,000. Pugh earned the second spot and collected $120,000.
Natalia Zvereva and Larissa Savchenko rallied to beat Sylvia Hanika and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the decisive doubles match, and the Soviet Union eliminated defending champion West Germany, 3-2, in the semifinals of the Federation Cup at Melbourne, Australia.
Savchenko beat Hanika, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, and Kohde-Kilsch downed Zvereva, 7-5, 6-1, in singles.
In the other semifinal match, Czechoslovakia beat Canada, 3-0.
