Local News in Brief : 3 Supervisors Back a State Helmet Law

Share

A proposed state law that would require motorcyclists to wear helmets won the backing Tuesday of Los Angeles County supervisors, who said the measure would prevent injuries and save lives.

The board voted 4 to 1 to voice support for the mandatory helmet bill, which was reintroduced in the state Legislature by Assemblyman Richard Floyd (D-Hawthorne). Similar legislation was vetoed last June by Gov. George Deukmejian.

Supervisor Mike Antonovich, who cast the dissenting vote, said he agreed with the use of helmets for safety reasons but argued that forcing motorcyclists to wear them would restrict freedom of choice.

However, Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, who had pushed for the helmet law, said the law would help cut down on the health costs and insurance premiums of motorcyclists.
