Los Angeles businessman Michael R. Goland, a major contributor in recent years to pro-Israel candidates, was indicted today by a federal grand jury on charges of violating federal election campaign contribution laws by organizing an illegal effort to aid the 1986 reelection campaign of Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.).

Goland, Lyle R. Weisman of Beverly Hills and Sandor E. Habalow of West Los Angeles were charged in the indictment with devising a scheme to secretly provide $120,000 in illegal campaign contributions to American Independent Party candidate Edward B. Vallen with the aim of siphoning votes from Republican candidate Ed Zschau, thus increasing Cranston’s narrow margin. Named in one of five counts of the indictment also was Michael B. Altman of Sherman Oaks.
