Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals was baseball’s highest-paid player last season with earnings of $2.34 million, the New York Times reported.

Smith, a shortstop, was 1 of 12 players who earned $2 million or more, according to a study conducted by the paper, which also showed that 82 players made the minimum salary of $62,500.

Catcher Gary Carter of the New York Mets was No. 2 on the list with earnings of $2,298,572.

The New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals were the only teams with two players among the $2-million earners. Don Mattingly and Jack Clark of the Yankees were tied for 10th with Dale Murphy of Atlanta, each earning $2 million.

The Royals had George Brett, eighth with $2,019,460, and Willie Wilson, ninth with $2,000,761.
