Don Majkowski did all he could to keep Troy Aikman from taking his job.

Majkowski completed 18 of 36 passes for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns Sunday and the Green Bay Packers avoided their worst record in 30 years with a 26-17 victory over the Phoenix Cardinals.

A loss by the Packers (4-12) would have given them the No. 1 pick in the college draft, which likely will be Aikman, UCLA’s All-American quarterback. Instead, the Dallas Cowboys (3-13) will get the No. 1 pick.

“We’ll have to wait and see what happens because they’re always going to be guys they bring in to try and get your job,” Majkowski said. “But I’m not worried about those outside factors.

“I’m going to be a lot more confident going into next year. And the team is going to be more confident next year after winning the last two games this season.”

Majkowski put the Packers ahead to stay, 20-17, on a 10-yard touchdown pass to fullback Larry Mason 4:47 before halftime and added a 2-yard scoring pass to Clint Didier with 5:55 left in the third quarter.

Packer Coach Lindy Infante didn’t care about losing the No. 1 pick.

“I said a long time ago that we’d rather win than get the first pick,” Infante said. “I hope no one ever accuses me of ever losing a football game to get the first draft pick.”

The Cardinals (7-9), in their first season since moving from St. Louis, lost their fifth straight game since moving into a tie for the NFC East lead. That gave the Cardinals their fourth consecutive losing season.
