Anthony Cook scored 21 points Sunday to lead ninth-ranked Arizona to a 76-59 victory over Washington State in the Pacific 10 Conference opener at Tucson.

Brian Quinnett led the Cougars with 19 points, including 8 in the first 5 minutes 12 seconds as Washington State took an 11-10 lead. Cook then scored 6 points to give Arizona a 16-13 lead, and Arizona never trailed again. The Cougars (4-4) held All-American forward Sean Elliott to 2 points in the first half, but Arizona still led 34-26 at halftime behind Cook’s 15 points.

Arizona (4-1) scored 11 of the first 15 points of the second half to gain a 45-30 lead, and the defending Pac-10 champions were never threatened.

Arizona’s Jud Buechler had 13 points as did Elliott. Elliott had been averaging 21 points.

“Washington State did a great job of keeping Sean from being a factor,” especially in the first half, said Arizona Coach Lute Olson.

“It wasn’t a very inspiring game. The crowd wasn’t very inspired,” Olson added. “It was our first conference game, we played it, we’ll take it from there.”

Brian Wright scored 18 for Washington State.

Iowa State 99, Bradley 97--The Cyclones had two 2-point victories to win the Phenix National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Ball tournament at Tokyo.

Both outcomes were decided by free throws in the final seconds by Mark Baugh and Sam Mack.

Iowa State posted a 74-72 victory over Southern Mississippi Saturday.

Sunday, Bradley’s fast-break offense carried the Braves to an early 39-26 lead. Iowa State held Bradley to only 8 points in the last 10 minutes of the first half and scored 22 for a 48-47 halftime lead.

Bradley Coach Stan Albeck said the turnaround resulted from “poor judgment on our part in shot selection and their good defense.”

In the second half, Iowa State built a 77-63 lead but Bradley rallied as Anthony Manuel scored 14 points in a span of 2 1/2 minutes. The Braves tied the score, 97-97, with 10 seconds left on Manuel’s driving layup but he was called for a foul after the shot.

Baugh, who finished with 24 points and was 11 for 12 at the foul line, then sank the deciding two free throws. Bradley nearly tied the game again at the buzzer but Paul Wilson missed a short off-balance shot.
