The Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area has established a $10,000 endowment to award annual scholarships to four current or past club members.

The Lou Yantorn Memorial Scholarship Fund was named for the former executive director of the club who died 6 months ago.

Richard Power, the current executive director, said the club’s directors established the endowment in July. He said the interest from the fund will be used to pay for the annual scholarships to Orange Coast College.

Scholarship recipients will be selected from each of the club’s four branches, two in Costa Mesa and one each in Newport Beach and Irvine. The club said students will be awarded the scholarships based on financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.

“Lou (Yantorn) dedicated his life to young people, and his dream was to set up a scholarship fund for past and present Boys and Girls Club members,” Power said.

Yantorn was a former pro football player who was executive director of the club for 22 years before retiring in 1984.
