The Pacific Symphony has received a $150,000 challenge grant from the San Francisco-based James Irvine Foundation, orchestra officials announced Tuesday.

The grant, the largest in the orchestra’s history, is payable over three years on a one-to-one matching basis for new or increased contributions of at least $2,500, according to Louis G. Spisto, the Pacific’s executive director. The orchestra must raise $50,000 during each calendar year to qualify for the grant.

The grant will be used to help the organization attain its fund-raising goal of $1 million in 1988-89, expand its contributed income base and establish a cash reserve by the end of 1992.

“The grant will enable us to attract new donors and stimulate major gifts from individuals and companies,” Spisto said.

Bowers Museum in Santa Ana closes to the public on Dec. 31 for a $12-million renovation and expansion effort, with construction beginning late in 1989. During this period, the institution will provide additional educational outreach programming for school groups and families, including the Mobile Museum, a trailer displaying an exhibit on Orange County history.

The Bowers Museum Shop, now at 2036 N. Main St. in Santa Ana, will remain open, and the museum plans to sponsor special events throughout the year. Administrative offices will be moved to a museum-owned building at 205 W. 20th St. During the renovation, the Mission-style courtyard of the original 1936 building will remain open during weekday business hours only.
