Sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner and swimmers Matt Biondi and Janet Evans are among the 10 finalists for the 1988 Sullivan Award.
The Sullivan Award has been presented annually since 1930 by the Amateur Athletic Union to the country’s best amateur athlete.
Besides Griffith Joyner of Newport Beach, Evans of Placentia and Biondi of Berkeley, the finalists include:
Greg Barton of Newport Beach, kayak; Bonnie Blair, Champaign, Ill., speed skating; Brian Boitano, Sunnyvale, Calif., figure skating; Roy Jones, Pensacola, Fla., boxing; Karch Kiraly, San Diego, volleyball; Katrina McClain, Charleston, S.C., basketball, and John Smith, Stillwater, Okla., wrestling.
The winner will be selected by about 2,500 voters, including AAU officials, past winners and sportswriters and announcers.
