North Carolina State’s Dick Sheridan turned down the head football coaching job at Georgia on Saturday despite saying he found no negatives with the Bulldog program.

Sheridan, 47, became the second candidate to refuse the Georgia position. Erk Russell of Georgia Southern said last week he couldn’t make a long-term commitment to the school after reportedly being offered the post being vacated by Vince Dooley.

“I think you have to react to situations as they occur,” Sheridan said at a news conference at the Wolfpack football offices. “I think anybody in my profession would listen to what a program like Georgia has to say. I hope it gives some credibility to what I’ve said all along. I’m happy here. I’m not looking to leave, but if somebody is going to talk to us, it’s silly not to listen.”

Sheridan met with N.C. State Athletic Director Jim Valvano and Chancellor Bruce Poulton on Friday to discuss the future of the Wolfpack program before returning to Augusta, Ga., to be with his family Friday night.

Sheridan then told Georgia President Charles Knapp at a breakfast meeting Saturday that he would be returning to Raleigh as head coach.

Before Sheridan arrived, N.C. State had three straight 3-8 seasons. He has led the Wolfpack to two Peach Bowls, including this year’s game against Iowa.
