Prep Basketball Roundup : Curtis Scores 29 Points to Lead Estancia Past Sonora, 94-53

Mike Curtis scored 29 points to lead Estancia High School to a 94-53 victory over Sonora Monday in the first round of the Coast Christmas basketball tournament at Estancia.

The Eagles (9-0), one of two undefeated teams in Orange County, led, 26-9, after a quarter, with Curtis scoring 8 points. Estancia increased its lead to 45-17 at halftime.

Curtis scored 17 points in the second half, including 4 3-pointers. Tim Kjar scored 19 points for Estancia.

Greg Farlow scored 12 points and Brian Holt 11 for Sonora (4-5).

In other first-round games:

Irvine 62, Glendale Hoover 58--Bryan Allred scored 21 points, including 7 in the fourth quarter, for the Vaqueros (10-1). Irvine made 6 of 8 free throws in the final quarter. Raphael Molle scored 19 points and John Molle 11 for Irvine. John Hillman scored 21 points and Ron Pinkney 18 for Glendale.

Huntington Beach 58, Laguna Beach 54--The Oilers held off a fourth-quarter rally. Huntington Beach (4-4) led, 48-36, going into the final quarter but needed 2 free throws from Andy Thompson and 2 from Steven Lucas to clinch the victory. Lucas scored 17 points, Joey Katter scored 11 and Scott Drake 10 for Huntington Beach. Dain Blanton scored 16 points and John Trevino 14 for Laguna Beach (4-4).

Laguna Hills 76, Los Alamitos 63--Pat Nelson scored 22 points and Beau Hossler 21 to lead Laguna Hills. The Hawks (4-4) led, 40-35, at halftime, then outscored the Griffins, 21-10, in the third quarter. Chris Sheff had 14 points and Trent DeVreugd 10 for Laguna Hills. Robert Conlisk scored 24 points and Mike Wilson 14 for Los Alamitos (3-8).

In the Brea-Olinda tournament:

El Modena 84, San Marcos 55--Robbie Pietsch and John Darrow each scored 20 points to lead the Vanguards (9-2) to their third consecutive victory. El Modena led, 27-8, after one quarter and 57-24 at halftime in the first-round game.
