Rookie guard Dan Majerle of the Phoenix Suns, hospitalized with abdominal pain stemming from mononucleosis, has an enlarged spleen and may be sidelined up to 3 months, the team’s doctor said.
Majerle, a first-round National Basketball Assn. pick last June and a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team, was diagnosed as having mononucleosis last week and was expected to be out 2 to 4 weeks.
He had missed last Thursday’s home game against the San Antonio Spurs with what was believed to be the flu. But when Majerle told team officials he did not feel right, blood tests were taken and they came back positive for mononucleosis.
Majerle, 6 feet 6 inches, 220 pounds, was admitted to a Phoenix hospital Saturday night after complaining of abdominal pain.
He began this season as a starter for Phoenix but was switched to a sixth man after a few games. Majerle averaged 9.0 points, 2.9 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 26.3 minutes in 21 games.
