Culver City Police Report Decrease in Major Crimes

Major crime in Culver City has decreased for the eighth straight year, dropping 8% from last year, and 34% since 1980, Police Chief Ted Cooke told a Wednesday morning press conference.

Major crimes, such as robbery, burglary, auto theft and homicide, dropped from 3,198 reported incidents in 1987 to 2,945 in 1988, and from 4,480 in 1980, according to Lt. Ellis Smith.

Cooke attributed the steady decline to high police visibility.

Cooke said officers are assigned to shifts based on the demand. For example, he said, if Mondays are found to be the busiest day for calls, most officers will be assigned to work that day. If the night shift generates 50% of the service calls, then 50% of the available force will be assigned to that shift.

Cooke said the department has an average response time of 3 minutes for emergency calls, and 13 minutes for non-emergency calls.
