IN BRIEF : Sukova in Australian Semifinals
Top seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia breezed to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Catherine Tanvier of France to advance today to the semifinals of the $150,000 Danone Australian women’s hard-court tennis tournament.
Sukova, 23, earned a meeting with third-seeded two-time NCAA champion Patty Fendick of the United States.
Fendick qualified for the semifinals for the second-straight year by downing seventh-seeded Czech Jana Novotna 6-4, 6-1.
Australian Jenny Byrne also advanced with an upset 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 triumph over fourth-seeded compatriot Anne Minter.
Byrne, 21, will face ninth-seeded Dutch teen-ager Brenda Schultz on Saturday because the 16-year-old ousted 11th-seeded American Gretchen Magers 6-3, 7-6.
