A Poway man pleaded innocent Friday to attempted murder charges stemming from an attack on his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

John Travis Hensen, 26, was also arraigned on charges of child abuse and inflicting corporal punishment on the boy. The toddler remained hospitalized Friday.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Cathy Stephenson said the boy had severe injuries in his throat, buttocks and genitals, as well as internal injuries.

Bail was set at $1 million by San Diego Municipal Judge H. Ronald Domnitz. Domnitz ordered a preliminary hearing for Feb. 24. Hensen waived his right to have a bail review next week.

Stephenson said Hensen is an escaped prisoner from Florida, where he was serving a two-year sentence on a drug conviction.

Hensen lived with his girlfriend in Poway. He was arrested Wednesday.
