A judge ruled Friday that a man suspected of wounding three people in a drive-by shooting in downtown San Diego is mentally competent to stand trial.
Roger Spaulding, the attorney for Rolando Ignacio, 25, had questioned whether Ignacio understood his legal proceedings. Two court-appointed psychiatrists said Ignacio is competent, and San Diego Superior Court Judge J. Perry Langford ordered him to appear for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 23.
In the Nov. 22 shootings, Robert Mengar, 59, his fiancee, Cynthia Conyiers, 37, and Susan Snyder, 29, were hit while walking in the Gaslamp Quarter downtown. Mengar and Conyiers had just come from a Lions Club meeting.
Ignacio remains in County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. He is charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
A motive for the shootings has not been determined.
