Four nationally ranked players will take to the courts today in the finals of the third annual San Diego Open Badminton Tournament at 10 a.m. at the Federal Building in Balboa Park.

Joy Kitzmiller (Manhattan Beach), the No. 1 U.S. women’s singles player, will play Canada’s Denyse Jullien in one final.

The No. 1 U.S. men’s doubles team of Chris Jogis (Redondo Beach) and Benny Lee (Tempe, Ariz.) will play Mike Walker and Fredrico Valdez (Peru). Jogis, ranked No. 1 in men’s singles, will then play Lee.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene won the Whittier tournament with a 72-37 victory over UC Santa Cruz. Camille Armijo led Point Loma (9-4) with 16. Ann Duffy, the tournament MVP, and Shawndel Reddic added 12 each.

The University of San Diego (4-6) broke a 3-game losing streak by defeating Weber State (7-2), 78-74, in Ogden Utah. USD’s Molly Hunter made two free throws with 23 seconds left to clinch it.

San Diego State remained undefeated (12-0) by defeating host UC Santa Barbara (4-8), 91-61. SDSU was led by Chana Perry with 33 points and 12 rebounds.

BASEBALL

The San Diego Stars all-star team returned Friday from Australia, where it won the 1988-89 Australian International Boys’ Baseball Tournament. The Stars, made up of 11- and 12-year-olds, finished 8-0 and won the championship with a 2-0 victory over the Australian national team from Sydney. University City’s Travis Ahern, the tournament MVP, threw a 6-inning 2-hitter in the final game for his second victory.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene lost to Trevecca Nazarene, 118-80, in the third-place game of the Point Loma Tournament. David Shelton led Trevecca (7-9) with 30 points; Mark Ryan led Point Loma (2-11) with 22. Biola defeated Olivet Nazarene, 86-61, for the championship.

UC San Diego lost to Millikin (7-2), 75-70, in the championship round of the La Jolla Classic. UCSD (4-8) was led by Kirk Kramer (20), Rick Batt (12), and Bill Gerlach (9), who were all named to the all-tournament team.
