Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Extension Given on Basketball Deal

Share

Developers seeking to build a sports arena to attract a National Basketball Assn. team to the city received a 60-day extension Tuesday to hammer out a final deal.

The City Council granted the extension request from the Papiano Group on a unanimous vote with no discussion.

City officials have been working since June with the Papiano Group, a partnership of the Nederlander Organization, Ogden Financial Services Corp. and Neil Papiano, a Los Angeles attorney, to select a site, finance and build the proposed 20,000-seat arena.

Last month two preferred sites for the sports venue were selected: a 20-acre parcel of downtown redevelopment land located across from City Hall and a 15-acre parcel of county land at Douglas Road and Katella Avenue near the Anaheim Stadium. The major hurdle for any site remains space for parking, city officials said.

A final choice for building the proposed $50-million arena is not expected until next month at the earliest, city officials said.
