Top-seeded Martina Navratilova advanced to the third round of the $350,000 New South Wales Open tennis championships at Sydney, Australia, Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Andrea Temesvari of Hungary.

Navratilova, using the tournament as a tuneup for next week’s Australian Open, was happy with her play in her first match since the Virginia Slims championships in November.

“There is nothing in my game that is not all right. I just need to be a little sharper,” said Navratilova, who was broken when serving for the match at 5-2 in the second set.

Navratilova, a three-time winner of the tournament, faces South African Dinky van Rensburg today.

Israeli Amos Mansdorf continued his success in the $145,000 New Zealand Open, beating American David Wheaton, 7-5, 6-1, at Auckland, New Zealand.

The top-seeded Mansdorf, ranked No. 26 in the world, cruised into the quarterfinals, joining Roger Smith of the Bahamas, New Zealander Kelly Evernden and eighth-seeded American Jim Grabb.
