College Basketball Roundup : No. 11 UNLV Escapes Fresno With 83-77 Win

Stacey Augmon scored 18 points, including 4 in the final 3 minutes, and 11th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas got past Fresno State, 83-77, Wednesday night in a Big West Conference game at Fresno.

Augmon rebounded his own missed shot and scored with 2:44 left to give UNLV (11-2 overall, 6-0 in the Big West) a 75-74 lead. Moses Scurry stole a Fresno State pass and scored on a layup 23 seconds later to make it a 3-point Rebel lead.

UNLV, which trailed most of the game, was behind, 41-37, at halftime.

Jervis Cole scored 26 points for Fresno State (7-5, 2-1), including 2 free throws that gave the Bulldogs a 74-73 lead with 3:32 left.

Greg Anthony added 16 points for UNLV; David Butler had 15 and Anderson Hunt 14. Freshman Wilbert Hooker came off the bench to score 14 points for Fresno.

UNLV took a 20-12 lead, but Fresno bounced back to go in front, 38-30, behind Cole, who scored 12 of his 16 first-half points during the 8-minute run.

North Carolina 88, Maryland 72--Kevin Madden scored 25 points, and Rick Fox had 18 to help the eighth-ranked Tar Heels overcome the Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Chapel Hill, N.C.

J.R. Reid, still playing as a reserve since his return to action from foot surgery, added 17 points as North Carolina (14-2) built a 46-35 halftime lead and coasted to victory in its ACC opener.

Jerrod Mustaf scored 18 points for Maryland (6-8, 0-3).

Georgetown 76, Pitt 57--Charles Smith scored 19 points, and the seventh-ranked Hoyas held the Panthers to 19 points in the first half of a Big East game at Landover, Md.

Pitt (7-6, 1-2) made only 7 of 23 shots in the first half and committed 14 turnovers. It marked the first time that the Panthers have lost two straight games under Coach Paul Evans, who took over the team in 1986.

John Turner added 18 points for Georgetown (11-1, 1-1), which is 7-0 against Pitt at the Capital Centre.

Louisville 75, South Carolina 52--Pervis Ellison scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, and the ninth-ranked Cardinals trounced the Gamecocks in a Metro Conference opener at Louisville for their 11th straight victory.

South Carolina (8-3) was within 48-43 when James Brewer’s short jump shot with 8:41 left ignited a 15-2 run that gave the Cardinals a 63-45 lead.

Louisville (11-2) held the Gamecocks to 9 points in the last 9:28 with its pressure defense.

Tennessee 100, LSU 96--Ian Lockhart twice tipped in missed free throws in the last 90 seconds, and the No. 17 Volunteers slipped past the Tigers in a Southeastern Conference game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee (11-1, 4-0) had a 14-point lead in the first half but had to make 7 of 9 free throws in the final minutes to hold on. Lockhart tipped in the 2 misses.

Dyron Nix had 20 points for the Volunteers despite sitting out nearly 13 minutes of the second half with 4 fouls, and Lockhart added 19 points. Chris Jackson scored 26 points for LSU (9-5, 2-2).

Seton Hall 74, Iona 58--The 13th-ranked Pirates turned around a 10-point deficit with 17 straight points and defeated the Gaels at White Plains, N.Y.

Iona (6-8) took a 13-3 lead in the first 6 minutes before Seton Hall (14-1) rallied. Frantz Volcy scored 6 points in the run as the Pirates held the Gaels scoreless for 5:36 during their streak. John Morton scored 18 points for the Pirates.

Duke 100, William & Mary 38--The top-ranked Blue Devils forced the Tribe into 27 turnovers and scored their most one-sided victory in 35 years at Durham, N.C.

William & Mary (2-10) also was the victim in 1954 when Duke won, 109-44.

Christian Laettner scored 13 points for Duke (12-0).

Florida State 85, Jacksonville 70--George McCloud scored 35 points, including 6 3-pointers, and the No. 14 Seminoles downed the Dolphins at Jacksonville, Fla.

Florida State (11-1) is off to its best start since winning 11 of its first 12 in the 1979-80 season, when the Seminoles went 22-9.

Curtis Taylor scored 15 points for Jacksonville (6-6).

Clemson 88, Virginia 70--Eldon Campbell had 20 points, and the Deacons outscored the Cavaliers, 18-3, to start the second half in an ACC game at Clemson, S.C.

After falling behind, 55-27, with 14:38 left, Virginia (7-6, 0-2) made a run to get within 77-68 with 1:14 left, but Clemson (9-3, 2-1) sank 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute.

Texas 66, Rice 65--Travis Mays scored 32 points, including a Southwest Conference-record 9 3-point shots, to lead the Longhorns past the Owls at Houston.

Mays’ 3-point goal with 1:28 left gave Texas (11-3, 2-1) a 65-63 lead. After a free throw by Joey Wright increased the Longhorn lead to 66-63, Davie Willie of Rice (6-7, 1-2) made 2 free throws with 12 seconds left.

TCU 51, Arkansas 45--John Lewis scored 22 points, and the Horned Frogs took the SWC lead by beating the Razorbacks at Ft. Worth, Tex.

Arkansas (8-3, 2-1) was within 45-44 with 31 seconds left, but Texas Christian (10-5, 3-0) made 6 straight free throws to wrap up the victory.
