Some South Bay cities will observe the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday by closing city offices and holding special programs. It is a federal and state holiday. A list of cities, and some special observances , follows.

Avalon: City Hall open.

Carson: City Hall closed. Saturday: Celebration, drill team exhibition, stage and gospel music, essay contest winners announced, game and food booths, rides and amusements; noon to 5 p.m., Avalon Park, 700 E. Gardena Blvd.

El Segundo: City Hall open.

Gardena: City Hall closed. Today: Youth Night, 7 p.m., Rowley Memorial Park, 13220 S. Van Ness Ave., featuring skits, programs and exhibits by community youth. Saturday: Fourth annual parade in honor of King begins at 10 a.m., starts at Rowley Park, 13220 Van Ness Ave., moving south on Van Ness to Compton Boulevard, east on Compton, south on Western Avenue to 162nd Street, ending in front of Gardena City Hall, 1700 W. 162nd St., with a short ceremony. Commemoration program at 7 p.m. at Nakaoka Center, 1700 W. 162nd St., includes musical presentations and speakers.

Hawthorne: City Hall open.

Hermosa Beach: City Hall closed.

Inglewood: City Hall closed. Monday: Sixth annual commemorative march and celebration. Mayor Edward Vincent and Inglewood City Council to lead symbolic march reminiscent of nonviolent civil rights protests of the 1960s, gathering at 8:30 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Recreation Center, Darby Park, 3400 W. Arbor Vitae. March will begin at 9:15 a.m., proceed half a mile east on Arbor Vitae, south on Crenshaw Boulevard, to First Church of God, 9550 Crenshaw Blvd. At the church, 10 a.m. ecumenical service will highlight important humanitarian contributions made by King. Program will include keynote address by Inglewood Municipal Court Judge Roosevelt Dorn and ceremony honoring winners of the Martin Luther King Jr. speech, essay and art display contests sponsored by the city and Inglewood Unified School District. Free refreshments will be served at the church.

Lawndale: City Hall closed.

Lomita: City Hall open.

Manhattan Beach: City Hall open.

Palos Verdes Estates: City Hall closed.

Rancho Palos Verdes: City Hall open.

Redondo Beach: City Hall open.

Rolling Hills: City Hall open.

Rolling Hills Estates: City Hall open.

San Pedro Municipal Building: closed.

Torrance: City Hall open.

All Los Angeles County offices, except for emergency facilities, will be closed on Monday. Agencies closed include county libraries, courts and schools.

All Los Angeles Unified School District schools and offices will be closed Monday. Children’s centers operated by the district’s Child Development Division will also be closed.

Also closed Monday will be schools and offices of: Centinela Valley Union High School District, El Segundo Unified School District, Hawthorne Elementary School District, Hermosa Beach School District, Inglewood Unified School District, Lawndale Elementary School District, Lennox Elementary School District, Manhattan Beach City School District, Redondo Beach City School District, Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, South Bay Union High School, Torrance Unified School District and Wiseburn School District.

El Camino College is closed today will be open Monday.

Harbor College and Cal State Dominguez Hills will be closed Monday.
