Newly acquired right-hander Walt Terrell became the second Padre to file for salary arbitration Monday, the final day players were eligible to do so.
The Padres and Terrell, who earned $665,000 in 1988, must exchange proposed salary figures by Thursday. Arbitration hearings will be held Feb. 1-20.
Terrell, 30, was 7-16 with a 3.97 earned-run average in 29 starts with Detroit in 1988. The Padres acquired him Oct. 28 in exchange for Chris Brown and Keith Moreland.
Terrell compiled a 47-32 record with Detroit from 1985 through 1987, but suffered a badly sprained ankle last winter and didn’t make his first 1988 start until April 30.
Padre shortstop Dickie Thon has already filed for arbitration. Thon is asking for $575,000, and the Padres are offering $400,000--the same salary Thon earned in 1988. Thon has also filed a demand to be traded. Under baseball’s collective bargaining agreement, the Padres must trade him by March 15 or he becomes a free agent.
