One motorist was killed and four people were injured when an allegedly drunk driver crashed into the back of a car stopped at a red light in Burbank, police said Tuesday.

The crash Monday night killed Virginia Kay Cyphers, 22, of Sepulveda, a security guard at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

Burbank Police Detective Bob Elias said Frank Hernesto Valqui, 28, of Glendale was arrested on suspicion of murder after the 10 p.m. accident at Alameda Avenue and Bob Hope Drive. Valqui, who suffered a head injury in the accident, was in serious condition at County-USC Medical Center, where he is being held without bail. He was initially arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving before Cyphers died, police said.

Elias said Valqui, who was traveling west on Alameda faster than the 35 m.p.h. speed limit, did not stop at a red light. Valqui’s car crashed into the rear of one stopped car, which was pushed into another car, he said.

Cyphers, who was in the first car, died shortly after the accident at St. Joseph Medical Center, which she had left just minutes before.

Her passenger, Ronald Glen Adams, 33, of Los Angeles, suffered minor injuries. He was treated at St. Joseph Medical Center.

In the second car, Jose Perez, 31, and his 11-year-old son, Jose, both of Burbank, were slightly injured and treated at the hospital.
