A female motorist told police she was the victim of a freeway shooting while northbound on California 163 at 2 a.m. Thursday.

The unidentified woman was between Interstate 8 and Friars Road when she noticed a car rapidly approaching from behind. She moved into another lane, but the car did not pass. Instead, the other driver pulled up on the right and slowed, she told police.

Police said the driver, a man between 20 and 30 years old and driving a red station wagon, pointed a gun at her. He then steadied his right hand over his left forearm and fired once, striking the woman’s car in the right rear window. The woman was uninjured.

The gunman’s car then exited from 163.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the weapon was a pellet gun or a small-caliber handgun.
