Local News in Brief : Irvine : City Agrees to Fund Consumer Affairs Office

Share

The Irvine City Council has agreed to fund a consumer affairs office to be operated and staffed by the Chamber of Commerce, officials said Friday.

The office, which will handle complaints by consumers doing business with Irvine merchants, will be given $63,500 for a 16-month period, Assistant City Manager Paul Brady Jr. said. The chamber, which originally had sought $70,000 over 18 months, will be required to provide quarterly status reports and monthly reports of complaints received, he said.

Brady said the council approved the funds last week on a 3-2 vote to determine whether, as the chamber argued, there was a need for such an agency. He said the city is unlikely to provide additional funds.

“Our intention is to see that the city gets out of it and that the business community fund it in its entirety,” Brady said. “If there is a need, the chamber has to come up with the funds to operate it.”

The program is expected to begin March 1.
