Researchers at UC Irvine will simulate an earthquake Thursday to test the resistance of storage tanks to earthquake-induced stress. Failures of the large tanks due to sloshing of the stored liquid during a quake can lead to fires, pollution or water shortages and impede emergency efforts. The test is part of a research effort undertaken by Medhat Haroun, chairman of the civil engineering department at the university.
