Women’s Basketball : Long Beach Too Much for Titans

The Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball team, taking advantage of 43 turnovers, defeated Cal State Fullerton, 84-50, Saturday night in a Big West Conference game at Long Beach.

The Titans committed 28 turnovers in the first half and fell behind, 55-25.

Long Beach, ranked 10th, is 12-4 overall and 6-0 in conference play. Fullerton fell to 12-4 and 4-3.

Shameil Coleman was the 49ers’ leading scorer for the third straight game, getting 15 points. Traci Waites added 13.

Gena Miller, who fouled out with 2:41 left, led Fullerton with 19 points.

UCLA 93, Arizona 69--Althea Ford scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bruins over the Wildcats in a Pacific 10 game at Westwood.

UCLA (8-7 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-10) led, 42-33, at halftime, then pulled away with an 8-0 run early in the second half.

The 93 points set a women’s record for the John Wooden Center. The old mark was 88, set 2 years ago against Arizona State.

Other top scorers for UCLA were Sandra VanEmbricqs with 14, Molly Tideback and Rachelle Roulier with 13 apiece and Elaine Youngs with 12.

Arizona (5-11, 0-6) was led by Amy Gamble, who had 19 points and 8 rebounds.

UCLA’s next game is Friday night at Washington State.

USC 78, Arizona State 58--Cherie Nelson scored 30 of her 32 points in the second half to lead the Trojans (6-9, 2-3) over the Sun Devils (7-9, 1-5) in a Pac-10 game at the North Gym on the USC campus.

Nelson also had 11 rebounds. Other top scorers for USC were Rosalind Hodge with 14 points and Tammy Story with 13. Karen O’Connor had 20 for Arizona State.
