College Roundup : SCC Slowed Down, but Wins

Southern California College won its sixth consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference game with a 77-65 victory over Azusa Pacific Tuesday in front of about 400 at SCC.

Azusa Pacific took a 10-6 lead 2 minutes into the game, but an 11-point Vanguard run sparked by Kyle Lundy gave SCC a 17-10 lead.

Southern California (16-2 overall, 5-0 in the conference) took a 43-32 halftime lead. But Azusa Pacific’s Mark Borgeson scored 6 points during a 10-0 run that helped the Cougars take a 49-48 lead, their only lead of the half.

SCC, averaging 91 points per game, was held to its second lowest total of the season.

“They were slowing us and lulled us into their tempo, which is what they wanted,” SCC Coach Bill Reynolds said. “We weren’t doing anything to change the tempo.”

SCC’s Terry Scruggs scored a game-high 22 points and had 3 steals. Todd Dixon scored 10 points, had 9 assists and made 3 steals.

In other Golden State Athletic Conference action:

Westmont 105, Christ College Irvine 82--Brad Schmidt had 19 points for Westmont (10-9) at Christ College Irvine. Keith Rodgers of Christ College Irvine (4-16) led all scorers with 23 points.

In California Coast Conference men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 125, West Coast Christian 79--Mike DeVries scored a game-high 30 points to lead Pacific Christian (16-8, 4-2) at Fresno.

In California Coast Conference women’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 68, West Coast Christian 32--Kris Dodson’s 27 points led Pacific Christian (11-9, 3-0) at Fresno.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Azusa Pacific 58, Southern California College 36--Amy Walter scored a game-high 21 points to lead visiting Azusa Pacific.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UCLA 6, UC Irvine 3--Top-ranked UCLA (2-0) defeated visiting UC Irvine (fifth ranked at 1-1).

In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.

San Diego State 3, UC Irvine 0--San Diego State defeated Irvine, 15-11, 15-10, 15-5, in San Diego.
