The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a salary arbitration hearing today by signing right-handed reliever Jeff Robinson to a two-year contract.

Robinson, 28, is the fifth of eight Pirates who filed for arbitration to agree to a new contract. Robinson had sought $820,000 in arbitration and the Pirates had offered $660,000.

Joe Bick, Robinson’s agent, said the deal includes a substantial raise for 1990 and averages more than $820,000 a season.
