Share

County supervisors on Tuesday approved a $172,000, six-month shuttle-bus program that would transport Willowbrook residents to nearby medical, shopping and recreational centers during the workday.

The proposal has been forwarded to the county Transportation Commission, whose approval is also required.

Under an agreement with the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, two buses would link the housing tracts and apartments of a two-square-mile unincorporated area with such facilities as Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center and the Hahn Shopping Center.

The proposed service area is bounded by Mona and Avalon boulevards on the east and west and 119th Street and El Segundo Boulevard on the north and south.

The 20-passenger buses, operating between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., would connect with lines of the Southern California Rapid Transit District, county officials said.

The fare would be 25 cents per ride, with blind people and children under 5 riding for free.
