The Detroit Tigers have signed center fielder Dwayne Murphy to a one-year contract for $400,000.

A six-time Gold Glove winner, Murphy had sought $450,000 and the Tigers had offered $350,000 before he filed for arbitration. Murphy, who signed Wednesday, made $375,000 last year.

In 49 games last season for the Tigers, he batted .250 with four home runs and 19 RBI. He was called up July 31 from the Tigers Class AAA farm club at Toledo of the International League. Murphy, 33, has a career batting average of .247 with 157 home runs.

His signing leaves the Tigers with two players still in arbitration--outfielders Gary Pettis and Pat Sheridan. Pettis’ case is scheduled for a Feb. 9 hearing in Chicago, while Sheridan’s case is set for Feb. 15 in New York.
