A 7-year-old Garden Grove boy was fatally injured by a hit-and-run driver Saturday as he and his brother were crossing Westminster Avenue, Garden Grove police said.
Tam Nguyen and his 10-year-old brother, who was not identified, were crossing the street at the intersection of Westminster Avenue and Kerry Street about 12:15 p.m. when the accident occurred.
Authorities said the two brothers were walking in front of a vehicle in the eastbound lanes that had stopped for them when Tam bolted into the next lane and into the path of a car.
Tam was pronounced dead at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, Police Lt. John Wood said.
Witnesses described the hit-and-run auto as a black, late model Toyota Celica, possible a hatchback. The car should have sustained minor front-end damage, Wood said. The driver was described as a white male in his 30s with sandy blond hair and a mustache. There was a female passenger in the car, Wood said.
Wood said the car that had stopped for the two boys also sped away before police arrived on the scene.
Wood asked that anyone with information about the accident or the vehicle involved to contact the Garden Grove Police Department at (714) 741-5704.
