Left-hander Teddy Higuera will receive the highest base salary in the history of the Milwaukee Brewers after agreeing to a 1-year, $1.525-million contract 12 days after undergoing back surgery and a week before an arbitration hearing.
Higuera had a herniated disc removed Jan. 20.
Other players who signed to avoid arbitration included outfielder Rob Deer of the Atlanta Braves, first baseman Gerald Perry and pitcher Charlie Puleo of the Braves, pitcher Jeff Russell of the Texas Rangers and left-handed pitcher Brad Havens of the Cleveland Indians.
