A 30-year-old Navy man apparently shot and wounded his 22-year-old wife during an argument early Thursday and then killed himself, police said.

Curtis J. Johnson Jr. apparently shot his wife, Billette Rene Johnson, once in the chest as they argued just after midnight in the 5200 block of Orange Avenue in East San Diego. Johnson then walked out on the front lawn and shot himself once in the head with his .30-30 rifle. He was dead at the scene, police said.

Billette Johnson told police she called for help from a neighbor’s house. She was taken to Mercy Hospital, where she was in good condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said. The couple’s two children were temporarily placed at the Hillcrest Receiving Home, police said.

Johnson was a Navy petty officer first class stationed in Long Beach, said Chief Petty Officer Craig Huebler, spokesman for the Commander Naval Base office in downtown San Diego.
