College Basketball Roundup : Chapman Loses Lead, Then Game

Chapman College squandered a 6-point lead midway in the second half and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo beat the Panthers, 67-56, Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball game at San Luis Obispo.

The score was tied, 26-26, at the half and Chapman pushed the lead to 45-39 with 11 minutes left before Cal Poly went on a 17-4 run in the next 7 minutes and led, 56-49, with 4 minutes left.

D.C. Chashman came off the bench to score a team-high 19 for Cal Poly (4-2 in conference play). Shawn Reed also came off the bench and scored 9 points, on 3 3-pointers, in the second half. He had 2 consecutive 3-pointers during the run.

Bryan Richetto scored a game-high 22 points for Chapman (10-9, 3-3). Russ Ortega added 14 and Rog Middleton had 8 points and a game-high 8 rebounds for Chapman.

In a Big West Conference women’s game:

Cal State Fullerton 80, University of the Pacific 61--Forward Jill Matyuch scored a team-high 18 and forward Kathy Werth 17 for host Fullerton (15-4, 7-3), which won its third game in a row. Werth, a junior transfer from Golden West College, was 8 of 10 from the field.

Center Gena Miller had 7 points and a team-high 8 rebounds for Fullerton, which led at the half, 38-21. The Titans play host to UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 5 p.m. Fullerton is 14-0 against UC Santa Barbara. Julie Szukalski scored 22 points for Pacific (4-14, 2-7).

In a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game:

Chapman 82, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 79 (OT)--Jackie Saunders and Julie King scored 4 points each in the overtime to lead Chapman at San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly led, 79-78, in overtime with 1:49 left but King scored to put Chapman ahead, 80-79, with 1:10 left. Saunders added the final basket with 30 seconds left.

Jennifer Uecke scored 20 points to lead Chapman (9-10, 4-2). Corine Sandfry had 19 for Chapman. Sandfry had a basket with 54 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 72-72. Each team had a final possession but neither could score.

Gina Cardinet scored 18 to lead Cal Poly (9-10, 1-4).

In a nonconference men’s basketball game:

Pomona Pitzer 78, Christ College Irvine 59--Rick Duque scored 20 points to lead visiting Pomona Pitzer (11-8). Albert Gay scored 15 and Keith Rodgers added 11 for Christ College Irvine (4-19).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

The Master’s 65, Southern California College 52--Kim Vargas scored 23 points to lead host The Master’s (5-14). Jennifer Hartigan scored 12 and Stacey Mounce had 11 for Southern California (4-16).
