Evert Upset by McNeil in Pan Pacific Tourney

Repeating her performance in the 1987 U.S. Open, American Lori McNeil upset Chris Evert today in the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Tokyo.

In the day’s second upset, American Mary Joe Fernandez, ranked 14th in the world, romped over Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, ranked No. 4, 6-2, 6-2.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova cruised into the semifinals, defeating West Germany’s Claudia Kohde-Kilsch 6-2, 6-2.

Playing before 3,200 spectators on artificial courts at Tokyo’s Aoyamagakuin Memorial Hall, seventh-seeded McNeil outscored third-seeded Evert 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

In the semifinals Saturday, McNeil meets American Zina Garrison, who downed compatriot Molly Van Nostrand 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Navratilova plays Fernandez in the other semifinal.

Top-Seeded Fendick Advances in Auckland

In other women’s tennis, top-seeded American Patty Fendick trounced Swede Maria Lindstrom 6-2, 6-0 today to advance to the semifinals of the Nutri-Metics International women’s tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.

Fendick, from Sacramento, meets unseeded Donna Faber in the semifinals. Faber, 17, from Bradenton, Fla., upset eighth-seeded American Beverly Bowes 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In other quarterfinal action, No. 6 Belinda Cordwell of New Zealand and No. 7 Jo Durie of Britain also advanced.
