Drive-By Killing Suspect Held; L.A. Police Arrest 118 in Sweep

Compton police said Saturday that they have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the shooting deaths last week of a 2-year-old boy and his 19-year-old neighbor by semiautomatic weapon fire.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Police on Saturday morning completed a 14-hour anti-gang sweep in which 118 people were arrested.

The murder suspect, whose identity was not released, was arrested Friday by a patrol officer on a Compton street corner. Police described the man, who was being held without bail, as a member of a local gang who lives in an unincorporated community near Compton.

At least two other suspects are being sought in the killings, police said.

The 2-year-old boy, Philip Fisher, was fatally wounded Jan. 28 when one of two men in a passing car fired at least 20 rounds from an assault weapon at a crowd of people gathered in the front yard of a home in the 1300 block of South Central Avenue.

The toddler was being held by his uncle when the shooting erupted. A neighbor, DeAndre Richards, 19, suffered wounds to the arm and neck during the shooting and died last week, police said. Three men were also wounded in the attack, none seriously.

More than 240 officers were involved in the LAPD crackdown, which officials said resulted in the arrests of 71 known gang members.
