The former boyfriend of a 27-year-old Oceanside woman who was shot several times Sunday was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder, Carlsbad police reported.

Police arrested Emmet Davis, 41, about 2 p.m. as he drove from his home in the 4400 block of Adams Street in Carlsbad. A police spokeswoman said Davis had phoned police earlier in the day to report a burglary.

Davis is accused of shooting Sherie Sisson while she was parked in her car at Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad. She was listed in serious but stable condition Monday night.

A spokeswoman at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla said Sisson had been shot in the chest and had a skull fracture, reportedly from a pistol-whipping.

Lt. Greg Fried said Davis thought his home had been burglarized after the policeman entered the house Sunday afternoon, looking for a 1-year-old child who was under Davis’ care. Police, who had feared for the child’s safety, said the youngster is believed to be in Los Angeles. While there, Fried confiscated a loaded .357-caliber revolver and a heavy bow with arrows. Fried said the empty shells found at the shooting site Sunday were not from a .357-caliber revolver.

Witnesses to the shooting told police they saw Sisson quarreling with a man. Friends of Sisson and Davis told police that the couple had carried on a tumultuous relationship for several years.

Davis was being held in County Jail downtown. No bail had been set.
