College Baseball : Northridge Strikes Late for 3-0 Win

Robert Wheatcroft pitched a two-hitter and Greg Shockey singled home two runs in a three-run eighth inning as Cal State Northridge defeated Westmont, 3-0, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Westmont.

Wheatcroft, a senior right-hander from Reseda High, struck out five and walked two. He also worked out of a fifth-inning jam in which Westmont (0-2) had two runners in scoring position with none out.

In the eighth, Shockey singled to left field, scoring Craig Clayton and Chae-Ho Chong for CSUN (2-0). Shockey was 2 for 3.

Azusa Pacific 7, Master’s 6--David Minor singled home the winning run with two out in the top of the eighth inning for Azusa Pacific in a nonconference game at Master’s.

Rick Simpson (0-1), a freshman right-hander who allowed two hits and three walks in two innings of relief, took the loss for the Mustangs. The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.

Junior center fielder Jeff Cole was 2 for 4 and scored twice for Master’s (0-3).

Moorpark 7, Mission 3--Third baseman Darin Furlong was 2 for 5 and drove in two runs for the Raiders in a nonconference game at Moorpark.

Furlong, a freshman from Simi Valley, had a triple and a double. He has driven in five runs in Moorpark’s two games this season.

Shortstop Dan Smith was 3 for 5 and Darren Aurand, Craig Pearson and Brian Pearson each went 2 for 4 for the Raiders (2-0).

Right-hander Jeff Berman (1-0) struck out six and allowed one earned run in six innings. Rob Teasdale pitched the final three innings and earned his first save.

Chris Romo took the loss for Mission (0-1).

Cerritos 10, Canyons 9--Third baseman Gary Morgan, a freshman from Canyon High, had 2 hits and an RBI in a losing effort for Canyons in a second-round game of the Foothill Tournament.

Dan Carroll (0-1) allowed six runs in three innings, walking eight and allowing only one hit for Canyons (2-1).

Cerritos improved to 3-0.
